The Government has pushed through an urgent change to the Child Protection Act after discovering an error with the original law had left some people off the register.
Critics say the register does nothing more than feed public hysteria.
But Police Minister Poto Williams says fixing the law will help keep people safe.
She says the impact of sexual abuse on children is devastating and the Government is trying to keep people safe.

The 81-year-old has admitted the charge in the High Court at Hamilton today after he took his sick wife out of her aged care home last October.
A passerby saw him preparing in his car and contacted police, and the man was taken into custody.
The 80-year-old wife had suffered a severe stroke in August.
The man has interim name suppression until next month and will be sentenced in May.
